Green Tea

Is any other food or drink reported to have as many health benefits as green tea? The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times, using it to treat everything from headaches to depression. 

The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots.  The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.

Snowy Mountain Green Tea

From the Wuyi mountains of china, comes this green tea of strength, flavor, and body.   With well developed long leaves and a hint of silver tip this tea signifies the  extremely selective plucking process.  Although this is a green tea, it is allowed to ferment very briefly to give the dry leaves a dark hue.  The taste is much smoother than traditional green teas with body and some pungency.  the aroma is almost sweet and floral.

Superior Gunpowder

Gunpowder teas are primarily produced in the town of Pingshui from the mountainous region of Guiji.  The technique for their production has remained virtually the same sing the Tang dynasty (AD 618-907).  After plucking, each individual leaf is rubbed and twisted by hand then dried by stir-frying in a large pan.  Depending on the quality of the leaf, ambient humidity, and temperature, up to 4 rounds of stir-fry drying may be required.  The end result of all this work is a fabulous cup that has been long prized for its robust fresh character and subtle touches of oak.

The most tender green tealeaves and buds are hand rolled into small pearls and infused with the essence of fresh jasmine blossoms. The fragrant blossoms are mixed with our reserve Dragon Pearl green tea according to a traditional tea scenting process that dates back more than 9 centuries. The tea absorbs the fragrant essence of the fresh jasmine flowers, making the pearls sweet and very aromatic. The blossoms are then removed by hand after the scenting process, leaving only the jasmine-infused tea pearls. Jasmine tea is said to ease nervous tension, break down saturated fat, reduce cholesterol and increase circulation.

Organic Jasmine Gold Dragon

Gold Dragon is one of the finest Jasmine teas available.  The Jasmine tree only blooms during May and June. The blossom lasts for about 12 hours and only comes out at night after the sun goes down.  About half way through the night the fragrance is at it’s peak and it is at this time the blossoms need to be picked and layered into the tea, by morning most of the fragrance has disappeared from the blossom, but if the tea maker has done his job correctly, this heavenly scent has been transferred to the tea and captured in time.

Genmaicha

The original type of genmaicha was developed hundreds of years ago by Zen monks who mixed green tea with the browned rice stuck to the bottom of their cauldrons. Soon after, roasted rice was blended with sencha or bancha by tea vendors throughout Japan where it became a popular household green. Genmaicha is smooth and mild with a warming and toasty aroma.

Green tea is produced by forgoing the fermentation process required to produce black tea.  Instead the leaves are steamed as soon as they are plucked and then bruised either by machine or by hand.    The leaves are then pan-fried or basket fired - a process that gives tea its distinctive glossy look and feel.  It is this manufacturing process that also gives green teas, and this Sencha in particular, their light sweetish flavor- a perfect match to the fresh flavor or the Long Island strawberry.  This Tea is Fabulous hot or iced!
